Special chimney cake conquers Taiwan
The traditional Hungarian chimney cake emerges in the most surprising places in the world. For instance, did you know that you can purchase the beloved Hungarian sweets in Taipei, Taiwan? A Taiwanese family opened its shop called Magyar Kurtos four years ago, Index reports.
You might have heard about the world-wide success of the Hungarian lángos, the deep-fried dough that people love all over the globe. Now it is time for the chimney cake to conquer other continents.
Magyar Kurtos sells the chimney cakes for 70 Taiwanese dollar (EUR 2) which is considered to be a high price in Taiwan, since many establishments offer their menus for only 50 Taiwanese dollar (EUR 1.4).
Despite the higher price, Taiwanese people seem to be interested in the special foreign dessert.
The family business makes the chimney cakes by hand, the only phase where they use a machine is the mixing of the dough. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes for a cake to be ready, it is always freshly made (same in Hungary).
The Taiwanese chimney cake shop, Magyar Kurtos, uses traditional Hungarian recipes to make their chimney cakes.
They offer all of the traditional flavours such as cinnamon, cocoa or coconut, but they also aimed to adjust the foreign dessert more to the Taiwanese people’s taste.
Traditional Taiwanese dishes are incorporated into the cakes: for example there are chimney cakes with rousong, almond, eggs, sunflower seeds or matcha tea.
The Taiwanese chimney cake differs from the Hungarian one not only in terms of the range of toppings, but the Taiwanese one also comes with two toppings: one for the outside and one for the inside, as opposed to the Hungarian one which usually comes in one flavour.
The Taiwanese people’s favourite seems to be the chimney cake with pork, cheese and garlic.
The Taiwanese culture seems to be an open-minded one, willing to try foreign dishes, and Taiwanese businesses seem to be brave enough to open, even if the people living in their area might have never tried their foreign specialties. They not only borrowed our dessert but they adapted it to their own taste which shows creativity. After all, we are all aware that the Chinese restaurants in Hungary and the traditional restaurants in China are usually nothing alike. Cultural diversity is always an asset, people.
